Art and Design

Intent:

At Grand Avenue Primary School, we aim to provide an art curriculum that develops and applies the creativity of all children. The children are exposed to a variety of artists, mediums and artistic techniques. We strive for freedom of expression and for the children to experiment creatively alongside analysing the lives and techniques of well-known artists.

Implementation:

Our medium-term planning is guided by the National Curriculum and our own Progression of Skills document, to ensure the children’s learning and attainment is progressive. Across the school art is taught in blocks, being taught every other half term. A typical art unit will include the study of an artist’s life and work in addition to the children practising the artistic skills of that artist’s style or medium.

The teaching of art is structured around the following four areas which the children revisit through the school:

  • Mark making
  • Colour
  • Sculpture
  • Evaluating and reflecting

Impact:

Our pupils will leave Grand Avenue Primary and Nursery School being able to discuss artistic representation using appropriate vocabulary and be able to analyse artistic techniques giving preferences and opinions. They would have been able to experiment with different mediums with which they are able to show some mastery of and be able to express thoughts, feelings and emotions through their own artwork.
