Year 4

In Year Four, children are exposed to a varied and exciting curriculum, building on their successes from Year Three. The topics in Year 4 are Invaders and Settlers, Ancient Egypt and the comparison between localities. In music, we are also privileged to have sessions with KMS who teach the children how to play the djembe drums.

The Team

The Year Four team comprises of Mr McHale (Year Group Lead), Miss Villar, Miss Taylor, Mrs Parry and Miss Strong. The classes are also supported by Mrs Evans, Mrs Thompson, Mrs Painter, Mrs Maqsood, Mrs McGee, Miss Cooper, Miss Morris and Ms Iqbal.

Miss Villar has been at Grand Avenue for 5 Years and really enjoys singing. She runs Grand Singers and leads music at the school.

Miss Taylor has been teaching at Grand Avenue for 2 years. She has a passion for teaching music. She runs Little Voices and will be overseeing Design and Technology at the school.

Mrs Parry has been at Grand Avenue for 13 years. She has taught in Key Stage 1 and 2 and is currently overseeing art. She loves teaching history and has two young children.

Trips and Visitors

This year we will embark on trips or engage with workshops that link with our topics of learning. These include:

Autumn
Matrix Theatre (Viking Workshop) where we will build on our knowledge of our topic 'Invaders and Settlers'. The cost for this is approximately £8.50.

Spring
Thames Young Mariners, where we will engage in team building activities involving water sports. The cost for this is approximately £60.
Egyptian Themed Day as the fantastic finale to our history topic - homemade costumes encouraged!

Summer
- Each year group has the opportunity to visit one of the parks that has inspired our school team names. Year Four visits Richmond Park where the children will have fun exploring the grasslands and visit the Isabella Plantation.
- The children will take part in Sports Day at Kingsmeadow this term. The children will be practising the races in their PE lessons so this is a chance for them to showcase their skills and cheer on their teammates! This event has no cost, but children will need to be dropped to Kingsmeadow.

There may be additional workshops over the year which link to themed events or occasions the school is celebrating.

How parents can support

In Year Four, children are expected to read at least three times a week and have their reading record signed. These will be checked every Thursday.

There is also the expectation that pupils practise their multiplication facts daily.

Home Learning will be on Google Classroom; it is set on Thursdays and due the following Tuesday. Your child will be expected to complete spellings, punctuation and grammar and maths home learning. Please click here for the Year 3 and 4 spelling list
