British Values
At Grand Avenue Primary and Nursery School, we are committed to promoting and embedding fundamental British values throughout our school community. We believe that these values are essential for developing pupils' understanding of what it means to be a responsible and respectful citizen in modern Britain.
Our Commitment to British Values
Democracy: We foster a culture of democracy by encouraging pupil participation in decision-making processes. Our School Council, elected by the pupils, gives every student a voice and the opportunity to contribute to school improvements.
The Rule of Law: We emphasise the importance of laws and rules, from the classroom to the wider community. Pupils learn about the value and reasons behind laws, the responsibilities they involve, and the consequences when they are broken through our curriculum and assemblies.
Individual Liberty: Our school provides a safe and supportive environment where pupils are encouraged to make independent choices. We educate and provide boundaries for young pupils to make safe choices, including in online spaces, through our e-safety and RHE lessons.
Mutual Respect and Tolerance: We promote mutual respect through our school ethos and behaviour policy. Pupils learn to understand, respect, and celebrate cultural diversity by engaging with different faiths and beliefs through our curriculum, including RE and multicultural events.
Integrating British Values in Our Curriculum
Our broad and balanced curriculum provides various opportunities for pupils to explore and understand British values. Subjects such as English, History and Geography, incorporate themes such as respect and democracy. For instance, in English, we read and discuss literature from diverse cultures, while in History, we explore events where British values were tested.
A Whole-School Approach
British values are at the heart of our school culture. We strive to create an inclusive environment where all pupils can thrive and where respect is integral to our daily practice. Our commitment to these values is reflected in our school policies, assemblies, and the everyday interactions within our school community.
